You can:
#1 – Avoid compromise. Quality of experience and value for money are top of your list, and so they should be. That doesn’t have to be at the expense of sustainability – options exists which combine them all.
#2 – Explore. Take a [...]

How Using Clay Can Keep You Naturally Healthy & Beautiful

Clay has been used by Man since the beginning of time. The Greeks used it, the Romans used clay poultices to heal wounds and Cleopatra used it for beauty masks. Forgotten with the upbringing of modern medicine it is being slowly rediscovered. Despite all the controversies concerning the properties of the clay, it has been used far longer by man than modern drugs, it never required any experimentation on animals, and it is 100% natural.
According to Hippocrates, Theophrastes, Dioscorides and Galen, the Greeks made use of clays. According to Plines, the Romans used it. Avicennes favors it in his famous writings. [...]

Greening your cake and eating it, too

I love yerba mate. No lies about it. I love the stuff. I love its color, I love its taste, I love that it can give me a boost without destroying the rest of my afternoon. Caffeinated beverages of any kind will send me running to the bathroom every 30 minutes, but yerba mate doesn’t.
But how green is consuming yerba mate? I try to get mine organic from companies with fair trade practices, but you still have to ship the stuff. Yerba mate, unfortunately, isn’t native to Washington state. So now what?
Of course, I experience a sense of entitlement. We own only one car, it’s fuel efficient, and we use [...]

My BP Guilt

One day, I stumbled upon an article about how the BP Spill might be unstoppable. My stomach twisted into a pretzel and an overwhelming shroud of guilt surrounded me. Guilt is something I’m used to – as both an environmentalist and a Mormon, guilt is an everyday feeling that I’ve learned to deal with everyday.
But that day, I just raged. I came home, made a tuna sandwich and wondered if I would one day tell stories to my children of magical things called tuna that used to swim in our now oily oceans. I wondered how much of my lifestyle contributed to this problem. My wife and I try to [...]

American apathy – kids playing in oily beaches

This movie is hilariously sad. Someone video tapes oil washing up onto the beaches in the form of tar balls.
I love how the kid starts screaming because there’s oil stuck on her feet and how her mom (in futility) tries to scrape it off and fails. And yet…they just continue playing in it?
Beaches are notoriously full of crap (and that’s beside the pollution we’ve contributed; sandy beaches are basically the ocean’s litter box – think about that for a while) and maybe we’ve just gotten so used to these kinds of things that playing in the sand and having your kids come back to the beach blanket covered in tar [...]

China attacked by algae

Wow, this is just yuck. Apparently, China is being besieged by a massive algae bloom caused by pollution. It’s like some kind of terrible, old horror movie. The picture alone is worth checking out this article from Treehugger.
One time, my wife and I went with some friends to Deception Pass in Washington. We waded through water filled with seaweed that’s washed up shore. My wife mentioned that it’s a lot like wading through the Korean seaweed soup she loves to eat. I agreed. There was something about seaweed (and its slimy texture) that resonates within the inner child in me. Whenever we take walks along the beach and I find one of [...]
